In this month’s Ask the Expert section our Spa Manager Beverley explains how you can make your manicure last longer.

How can I make my manicure last longer?

A good manicure should last up to two weeks but there are definitely a few things you can do to make it last longer between appointments.

Firstly, the prep – the night before your appointment and on the day, avoid applying hand lotion as the oils absorb into the skin and this can stop the polish from bonding to your nail as well as it could.

Once you’ve had your manicure, to make it last as long as possible, it’s a good idea to re-seal the topcoat every few days. A thin layer of topcoat polish is fine and make sure you take it right over the tip of your nail as this helps prevent chips.

If you can, try to wear gloves for any household work, like cleaning or washing up. If you’re having a bath, don’t leave your hands in the water for too long as this can lead to the polish coming off.

Try and be extra careful day to day – it can be tempting to use your nails for all kinds of things, like finding the end of the Sellotape, or peeling labels off but this will certainly make it more likely that your nail varnish will chip or break.  Likewise, certain chemicals can impact your manicure – if you’ve been swimming or applied suncream, make sure you give your hands a thorough wash.
